Having announced that as from 6th April 2006 SIPPS (Self Invested Personal Pensions) would be able to invest in buy-to-let property with the potential of getting 40% "discount" from the taxman, in the Pre-Budget Review on 5th December 2005 Gordon Brown made an abrupt about turn and called this scheme - which he introduced - unacceptable tax avoidance and promptly changed the rules - so this is no longer an option.
Not only did this about turn stop pension funds investing directly in residential property Mr Brown has also outlawed indirect investment into property companies. However there may be an opportunity after 5th April to invest in property trusts. We will post information on this as it become available. If you wish to sign up for our newsletter we will email this information when Mr Brown actually publishes the rules.
Note there are still a few opportunities for certain types of pension fund to invest directly in property. If you email us we will put you in touch with our pensions specialist who can advise you directly.
